Mr. Smith’s Bowl of Notes

Mr. Smith’s Bowl of Notes is a family/educational concert work that surveys western music of the past 400 years.

In the piece, a somewhat weary and whimsical visitor interrupts a concert. He ends up explaining how the music of the Baroque, Classic, Romantic, and Modern periods was composed using the same 12 notes. He then explains the odd adventure of how he came to be in attendance at the concert by using excerpts from the musical styles previously discussed.

Instrumentation: (3pic),2(eh),2,2 - 4,3,3,1 - Timp+2, Harp, Strings, Narrator (acting skills recommended).

Timing: 30 minutes.

Mr. Smith’s Bowl of Notes was commissioned and premiered in 2004 by Music Director Christopher Confessore and the Brevard Symphony Orchestra.
